Tempilaq® Advanced 1200°F — Liquid form, applications & standards

Monitor high temperatures in industrial furnaces, metallurgical heat treatment and ultra-high-temperature applications. Brush evenly to cover a wide surface area. 2oz bottle — compact and easy to carry on site.

After application the solvent evaporates quickly (quick-dry), leaving a thin film on the steel. When the temperature reaches 1200°F (649°C), the film changes colour clearly — a visual result recordable by photo for QA/QC records. Thinner (Part #24597) may be used for dilution if needed.

When should Tempilaq® be used instead of a crayon?

Tempilaq® Advanced vs Tempilstik® — Choosing the right tool

💧 Tempilaq® Advanced — Use when:
  • Curved surfaces, small-diameter pipe
  • Blind angles, hard to reach by hand
  • Wide, uniform surface coverage needed
  • Verify uniform heat distribution in PWHT furnace
  • Surfaces with ridges, grooves or complex profiles
🖊️ Tempilstik® — Use when:
  • Flat, easily accessible surfaces
  • Quick spot-check at a specific point
  • Outdoor / windy site conditions
  • Immediate reading needed, no drying wait
  • Multiple temperature levels required simultaneously

Standards and application context

📐 Applicable Standard

ASTM E220, AMS 2750 (Pyrometry) — calibration and verification of industrial heat equipment.

Heat-resistant alloys, ceramics and refractory materials. Metallurgical plants.

🖌️ Correct application technique

Application procedure and reading results

Shake the bottle well. Apply a thin, even coat on clean steel (free of oil and grease). Allow the solvent to evaporate fully (30–60 s depending on conditions). Heat the surface — when it reaches 1200°F (649°C) the film changes colour clearly. Photograph before the surface cools. If Tempilaq® thickens from evaporation, use Thinner Part #24597 to restore viscosity.

Key Advantages

  • Liquid form — applicable to curved surfaces, blind angles and small-bore pipe that a crayon cannot reach
  • Precise colour change at 1200°F (649°C) — accuracy ±1%°F
  • Quick-dry — solvent evaporates fast after application; ready to heat within 1–2 minutes
  • Uniform wide-area coverage — ideal for verifying heat distribution across large pressure vessels
  • No power source, no calibration required — ready to use immediately
  • Visual result (colour change), recordable by photo for QA/QC documentation
  • 2 oz (59 ml) bottle — compact, easy to carry on site, suited for spot-checks
  • Made in USA — C/O, Certificate of Quality, full export documentation

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Usage

Can Tempilaq® 1200°F be used outdoors?

Yes, but avoid strong wind during application so the film dries evenly. In high-ambient-temperature conditions (>40°C / 104°F), the solvent evaporates faster — apply immediately before heating. In high-wind offshore conditions, a Tempilstik® crayon is usually more practical for quick spot-checks.

❓ Storage

How should Tempilaq® be stored?

Seal tightly after every use — the solvent evaporates and thickens Tempilaq® if left open. Store in a cool, ventilated place away from heat and direct sunlight. If too thick, use Thinner Part #24597 to restore original viscosity.
