Correct field measurement technique
Mark the crayon on the steel surface before heating, at least 75 mm (3 in) away from the weld joint per AWS D1.1 Section 5. When the temperature reaches 100°F the mark melts — the signal that the next step may proceed. Do not measure directly on a surface just heated by an open flame.
