Verify preheat temperature for structural steel. Prevents cold cracking / hydrogen-induced cracking.
No power source and no periodic calibration required. When the crayon mark melts on the metal surface, the temperature has reached 158°F (70°C) — a clear visual result that can be photographed for QA/QC records right on site.

Correct field measurement technique
Mark the crayon on the steel surface before heating, at least 75 mm (3 in) away from the weld joint per AWS D1.1 Section 5. When the temperature reaches 158°F the mark melts — the signal that the next step may proceed. Do not measure directly on a surface just heated by an open flame.
