Preheat Temperature Lookup Table by Steel Type — AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, API 1104

Published 17 March 2025 · Fast Group Engineering · 10 min read

This page consolidates minimum preheat temperatures from the three most widely applied international welding standards in Vietnam's industrial sector: AWS D1.1 (structural steel welding), ASME B31.3 (process piping), and API 1104 (oil and gas pipeline welding). Data is presented bilingual English with corresponding Tempilstik® part numbers for rapid field look-up at the work site.

How to use this page: Identify the applicable standard from your WPS → find the steel category or P-Number → read the minimum preheat temperature → select the matching Tempilstik® part number. If your WPS specifies a value that differs from this table, always use the WPS value — this table is a technical reference document, not a project specification.
Tempilstik® temperature indicating crayons for preheat verification against AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, and API 1104 requirements
Identify the required preheat from the standard and steel type, then select the matching Tempilstik® part number to verify directly in the field.

Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
Xử lý nhiệt sau hàn — separate thermal cycle applied after welding is complete

Table 1 — AWS D1.1: Structural Steel Welding

Applied to: bridges, industrial buildings, offshore structures, module topsides, jackets.
Apply to: structural steel welding — bridges, buildings, offshore structures, jackets.

Carbon Equivalent formula (CE) — AWS D1.1:

CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15

All element values (C, Mn, Cr, Mo, V, Ni, Cu) are taken from the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) / Material Test Report (MTR) supplied with the steel lot. CE values must come from the actual material documentation — not assumed from the grade alone.

* Not required per standard — preheat to minimum 10°C (50°F) recommended when ambient is below 5°C or surface carries moisture.
* Not required per standard — but AWS recommends preheat to 10°C minimum when ambient temperature is below 5°C or surface has moisture.

Important — AWS D1.1: The values above are minimums only. For high-restraint joints (fillet welds into thick flanges, corner joints in heavy plate), the WPS typically specifies 20–30°C above the table minimum. Always check the WPS first and use this table for cross-reference only.

Table 2 — ASME B31.3: Process Piping

Applied to: process piping in refineries, chemical plants, power generation, and industrial gas facilities. Classified by P-Number — not by Carbon Equivalent.

What is a P-Number? ASME assigns a P-Number to weld base materials based on chemical composition and mechanical properties. The P-Number for a specific pipe is found in the approved WPS or on the Mill Certificate supplied with the pipe.

* Duplex stainless: preheat generally not required — but maximum interpass temperature ≤ 150°C (302°F) is mandatory to maintain austenite/ferrite phase balance. Use #28318 to verify interpass ceiling is not exceeded.

* API 1104 does not require preheat but recommends 50°C minimum when ambient is below 0°C or the surface is wet or carries moisture.

⚠ Note for Vietnam offshore and field conditions: For oil and gas pipeline welding in Vietnam, WPS preheat temperatures are typically 20–30°C above the API 1104 table minimums to account for high humidity, sea wind, wet pipe surfaces, and offshore site exposure. Always apply the WPS project value — do not use the table minimum directly in offshore applications.

Table 4 — Maximum Interpass Temperature Reference

Controlling interpass temperature is equally important as preheat. Exceeding the maximum interpass limit promotes excessive grain growth in the HAZ and reduces impact toughness — especially critical for alloy steels and stainless grades.

Material Max. Interpass Temperature Standard Notes Tempilstik® for Ceiling Check
Carbon steel ≤250–300°C (≤482–572°F) AWS D1.1 Check WPS — typically 250°C for structural steel #28039 or #28053
P11 (1¼Cr–½Mo) ≤300°C (≤572°F) ASME B31.3 Strictly controlled — affects HAZ toughness #28053
P22 (2¼Cr–1Mo) ≤300°C (≤572°F) ASME B31.3 Combined with mandatory PWHT after welding #28053
P91 (9Cr–1Mo-V) ≤300°C (≤572°F) ASME B31.3 / EN 1011-2 Mandatory strict control — exceeding degrades carbide structure and long-term creep strength #28053
Duplex stainless 2205 ≤150°C (≤302°F) API / NORSOK Maintain austenite/ferrite balance — overheating causes sigma phase embrittlement #28318
Austenitic stainless 304/316 ≤175°C (≤347°F) ASME Reduces sensitization risk (carbide precipitation at HAZ) #28025
